| Boy the "summer" Action
Films are really starting early this year :D. In the past
when a studio knew the film would not stand a chance with
the BIG fishes, it would release their movie in the spring.
But no more. DareDevil Rocked !!!
The scariest part of the evening was almost not seeing the
film because of a late meeting at work. Am I ever happy that
I got to the theater 10 minutes before screening and a HUGE
thanks to Steve and Jose from Legends Action Figures for giving
me a FREE pass :) Hee hee.
The cool thing about Premieres is that you DON'T have to
watch 20 minutes of TV Commercials before the film :) but
now Montreal Theaters have a NEW gimmick that is even worse
!!! Do you guys have RUMBLE SEATS in your cinemas? for the
entire movie yourchair VIBRATES to the bass and music and
sound effects. It's like having a kid kick your seat for 90
minutes. NOT FUN> I HATED the experience. Send me YOUR
thoughts if you know what I am talking about.
Oh one ting that DID play vefore the movie was the trailer
for X-MEN 2. That film looks SOOOOO cool. I can't wait to
see it. and the toys don't look too bad either ;p
OK, on to DareDevil...I am NOT what you would call a serious
comic book fan. I read some when I was young but never really
collected them. The extent of my knowledge is Batman, Superman
and Wonder Woman. OK, OK, you can STOP laughing now :D The
only thing I knew about the character was that he was blind
and played by Ben Affleck :)
The story: Since this is the first of a possible series,
we find out who DareDevil is, from his childhood, how he was
blinded and why he puts on a suit at night to fight crime.
My friendChantal said to me "It's always the same story...kid
loses his dad, mom, uncle, sister and becomes a crime fighter
seeking revenge and can't get a girlfriend because he can't
tell her his secret" yes that is true I guess but that
is the comic book formula. With all the cliche's in place
I still enjoyed the story very much. I liked the pacing and
the Darker Mood of the film. I actually prefered DareDevil
A LOT compared to last year's Spiderman, which had left me
with a "ho-hum" feeling when leaving the cinema.
The FX: There are some really amazing shots in this film.
I LOVE DareDevil's Point Of Vue, those blueish sound wave
patterns are just SO cool and even play an important part
in the film. Very nicely designed and executed :)
Some of DareDevil's leaps and jumps off buildings are way
cool too. Imagine if they finally get their butts in gear
and make a Batman using today's film technology? . Only at
the end of the movie on the church organ is the illusion broken
with "Video game" 3D quality animation. It's as
if they had to rush these shots because all through the film
until this point, the 3D "Stuntman" was very credible
and did not distract from the picture. The fight is still
VERY cool but you keep thinking that's so 3D. (Maybe it's
because I know all the tricks that the illusion is easier
broken)
The actors were all quite good. The choice of Ben I thought
worked well. An is it a coincidence his name in the film is
Matt? (as in best friend Damon) hee hee. Elektra and Bullseye
are very good as is the KingPin. Great casting. And there
are amusing comic moments that make you laugh out loud without
rolling your eyes. Look for Matt's law partner's Hands at
the Ball Recital scene. The 12 year old kids behind me were
giggling for almost 3 minutes after the fact :P
Since I have been blabbing long enough...If I had paid to
see the film I would not have felt ripped off. It's a dark,
moody story with a unique camera style and good performances
to boot. It has become one of my fave Comic Movies I have
seen. Well worth the money and if they make a sequel I will
be there :) I can't wait to see the DVD Special Features on
this one
