| After sitting through Harry Potter
3 we went for a bite to eat at Wendy's and then headed back
for The Day After Tomorrow. I must admit my weakness for disaster
films of the 70's :) The Posseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno,
Airport, Earthquake. I will also admit that I am a fan of
Godzilla and Independance Day. This isn't oscar material,
and you know it going in. These movies are about the FX and
having fun. This said, I very much enjoyed The Day After Tomorrow
a Lot.
Plotwise, we meet several characters in the begining so that
you feel some kind of sadness when their time comes to die.
OK, maybe not LOL. I like how the pacing of the movie is like
in the 70's films. We slowly discover that the icecaps are
melting causing major problems with the oceans temperature
causing snowing in India, HUGE HUGE hail in Japan, Tornadoes
in L.A. and Tidal Waves in New York which lead us to the Special
Effects scenes and then the rescue of the stranded kids in
the New York Library.
Needless to say the Special Effects are what people want
to see in this movie and WOW!!! do they deliver. Think Twister
X 500% improvement in quality. Seeing the tiles and windows,
cars, billboards break apart due to the tremendous winds and
the poor population stuck in the streets. Very cool. I can't
wait to rewind this and watch over and over on DVD later this
year. The scenes in New York are just as impressive. Having
the water hitting the Statue of Liberty and cascading into
the streets of Manhattan. When not trying to replicate actors,
3D really does some awesome photo realistic effects that blow
your mind :) It must have been fun to work on this film.
If you enjoy amazing Special Effects and some Popcorn, sit
back and enjoy the ride. Well worth the admission. If not,
a DVD rental / purchase for sure.
