Where do I begin...:P How about... if you didn't work on this movie, and have no reason to go see your work on the big screen and see your name (misspelled) in the credits, then stay home and watch the original on DVD :)

As many must know by now this film has a history of trouble dating back 5 years. The original director had a heart attack and died before starting filming. So they hired a 2nd dirctor, who completed his movie and after a screening with Warner Brothers executives, was told even Bantha Poop smells better then this. LOL. WHe was asked where the vomit and head spinning was? What I don't get is if there is no vomit in the script, and it gets green lit, why do they question it's absence in the final film? anyhow...after he was fired, Renny harlin was asked to reshoot some blood and vomit to add to the movie. Well that escalated into a complete reshoot which involved recasting the film since the original actors where no longer available to do their reshoots. Yikes...

So now in 2004, The beginning is finally released upon us poor public LOL. I am now even more curious to see the 2nd version of the film so I can compare it to this and judge why it needed to be refilmed? could it really have been any worse? I see where Renny tried his best to give us the "feel" of the original. You can see it so obviously , almost as cheap knockoff, as the camera pans across locals in the street shops. Men forging swords, hitting the metal with their hammers. clang clang clang....sound familiar?

One of the MAIN problems that Lucie and I both agreed on was the awfull casting choices. Merrin is OK, he;s the only believable character. but themain Nurse played by Izabella Scorupco, I don't know why she kept reminding me of Sandy in Grease. LOL. You are in the 40's, in the desert, where is the sand and dirt on your face? It was like she was about to go for a Vanity fair photo shoot. So not credible. And I must agree on the use of "scare" tactics in the film. Leaches on the little kid - oooh scary, flies...oooh, run away....even the shot i worked on with the butterfly coming out the captain's mouth. That is supposed to be scary? Please. The only gruesome scene was the one my friends and I at Meteor worked on...The Hyena's mauling a 7 year old. I'm sorry but that does NOT fit in an Exorcist movie. Maybe the Omen, but NOT exorcist.

The end possession which I assume was the main focus of the studio heads, is almost laughable. they use make up to try and resemble Reagan's likeness from the 70's but something is just wrong. Even the dialogue seems to try too hard to match the first..."what's a matter, don't you want to kiss me anymore father?" All i could do is roll my eyes up into my socket as if I was the one possesed LOL.

The cool thing about the first one is that it seemed like a documentary. It's slow pace and realism in the breakthrough make up effects of Dick Smith, is what made you believe this was a true story. The begining is FAR from that and I wish I could get my money back. YUK. I have seen the original at least 15 or more times, ONCE is more then enough for The Beginning. Here's hoping there won't be The End coming out in 2006 :P
