RATING

Ever since seeing the trailer so many weeks ago, I was looking forwards to this film. I knew nothing of the comic book, so I can't compare it on that level, but visually it is so cool in it's design...I was hooked within 30 seconds. Met my friend Robert at the cinema and I can say neither of us were dissapointed.

Being a comic book film, there are similar elements to scenarios we have seen before. But I think that is true to every comic, not just HellBoy. There is a blend of Raiders of the lost ark, X-Men, Men in Black and a little bit of Hellraiser :P - this isn't sound of music...some people might be grossed out...we are talking Hell here - LOL.

I love the tone of the movie. Like Hulk, X-Men, Superman etc...we get a great opening sequence showing the origins of HellBoy and where he came from and who the good guys / bad guys are. The acting is done in a serious tone adding more credibility to the movie. Even when we meet HellBoy as an adult, the movie makes fun of this as placing actual Comics in HellBoy's room and him complaining that the likeness isn't quite accurate. The humor is quite witty and makes you laugh with the characters not at them, like the childish tendencies of some other recent films. cough cough :P

There is a great scene when HellBoy befriends a kid on the rooftops during a "stakeout" eating cookies and milk. Very clever and funny :) Oh and when this poor dead skeleton is resurected to help guide the gang to the secret lair opening..."If I had legs I would kick your A__" LOL Everyone laughed hard at that one.

The FX in the movie are just amazing. as usual Sony outdoes themselves. The portal at the begining is just so cool and the frozen monster made me think of the villains trapped in Superman 2. Abe Sapien is a great mix of costume and CGI. Plus it helps having one heck of a design. I love this character. The Sammael Beast is also very impressive. There is a great fight within the library and train station. seemless blend of 3D. Oh and let's not forget Kroenen. This dude reminds us of Wolverine because he fights with 2 knightsticks with blades, but he sure doesn't have the great looks of Hugh Jackman. Beware of when he removes his mask. YUK - LOL. I think the producers of the next Hellraiser film will be calling his agent - Hee hee. The character I was most surprised about was Liz. HellBoy's love interest. She isn't in much of the movie as the trailer makes us think she is, even though she has really cool fire starter abilities. I was very impressed with the blue flames.

In the end, I was very happy to have seen this in theaters. I went to Legends afterwards to pick up the figures. I hope they make more then these 5 characters. There are too many cool costumes to ignore their potential as figures. I will try and get reviews and pics of them up soon.

Well worth admission and I will certainly buy HellBoy when it comes out on DVD this Fall.
