| I had never read the books, never
heard the radio show, never seen the british tv show. So you
can call me a Hitchhiker Virgin :) I went into this film with
absolutely no clue apart from having my interest peaked from
seeing the trailer at work.
I guess what stands out the most of this movie is that it
is British Humour. In the same style as the Monty Python films
or fantasy fare like Labarynth, Dark Crystal I guess would
be good comparisons. If you don't catch their style of humour,
you might have the experience I did... I would hear what I
assume were jokes beacause all the audience was laughing but
I just sat there thinking "what? was that funny?"
LOL I just didn't get 60% of the jokes. I will admit that.
My friend Katie I guess is just smarter then me cause she
laughed a lot :) But I loved the visual style and special
effects as well as the narration animations. Those were very
funny.
The basic plot of the film involves a construction crew in
the galaxy is buillding a highway and earth just happens to
be blocking the road. So they decide Earth must be destroyed
so the highway can be completed on scheduale. A very funny
concept. Lucky for our main character, Arthur, his friend
just happens to be an Alien living among us and carries them
both off the planet just before it's destruction. Together
they now Hitchhike the galaxy to try and find the president
and figure out why earth was demolished.
Even though not everyone will get into the humor, there are
some scenes that just make you laugh SO much, it makes you
wish you were wearing Depends Diapers. The best gag involves
animated wool puppets, but I won't say more.. When you see
the movie you will KNOW what I was talking about :). My other
fave is when they land on Vogsphere and discover that if they
think, they get slapped in the face by some alien fly swatter
living under the desert sand. Very funny.
The speacial effects are first rate and in a bold move, the
Vogons are NOT 3D animations but instead created by Jim Henson's
Creature Shop. This really adds a lot more realism and discust
to their characters. These guys sure are UGLY, especialy when
reading poetry LOL.
So in the end, I was happy to have seen the movie, but don't
expect a roller coaster Sci Fi adventure. If you are a fan
of Labarynth and Monty Python's Holy Grail, then you will
surely enjoy this. If you are unsure, still well worth a rental
on DVD when it comes out. |
