| Well what can I say, are you
surprised I went to the Midnight show? :P How many of you
did the same?
The anticipation for this film, especially coming home from
Celebration III, was just so much more then when I was excited
to go see Episode II. So should you wait for the DVD? ....
hmmmm.... Heck no !!! but there are downsides...
The beginning of the movie was amazing. Even though not really
a ship battle as in Episode IV or VI, the zooming in and out
between those cool pre-star destroyers left me with a HUGE
grin on my face. Once they get inside the ship I did start
to cringe. What is with those Super Battle Droids voices?
speaking of which... What happened to the Neimoidians? Episode
I got a lot of flack for having them sound "too asian"
Now that it was done and established for their race, it is,
I find, more upsetting to cave in to the whole tip toe, don't
crack eggshells - political correctness attitude we seem stuck
in and have them now talk without their accent. OK, off my
soapbox. The fight with Dooku was cool but imagine had Darth
Maul not died in Episode I and was fighting Anakin here instead?
That would have rocked. Maul was such an Iconic cool character,
I still feel it was wrong to have killed him so easily.
As in the past 2 prequels, the visuals steal the show. WOW,
just amazing!!! But the acting and script, OUCH. I must admit
I am dissapointed that this excellent group of actors look
like high school play talent. My friend Lucie, who is not
a big Star Wars fan like all of us, could just not believe
how BAD the acting was. Mace Windu's dialogue was real real
bad. I've never seen Sam as wooden as in this film. Anakin,
Padme, I must admit I agree with her but for one exception.
Palpatine Rocks in this film. Makes you want to go watch Return
of the Jedi right now :). Do you remember reading several
months back how Lucas said this would be "Titanic in
outer space" well... I think NOT.
The Love story, do we need to go further in that? :P It just
was pure Bantha PooPoo. Nothing believeble here and WHO talks
like this? c'mon. Was I the only one rolling my eyes? A huge
dissapointment for me since this is the plot point that was
to make us feel teary eyed when Anakin falls into lava and
becomes Darth. Don't even get me started on the birth scene.
LOL. Luke...Leia...UGH (insert Shmi school of how to die really
bad on film sound). Having Vader scream NOOOOOOOO was just
as bad. I know I am not the only one with this gripe. Admit
it !!!! :P
Don't you feel that if the Ben/Anakin fight would have happened
at the MIDDLE of the film and Vader be in costume the last
third, the drama would have just kicked more butt? Padme would
turn to see Vader... scared, "Padme" ... "Anakin,
is that you? My god what happened" ... "Obi wan
did this t me" ... "I don't believe you, he is your
best friend" ... "do you betray me like he did"
and then choke her in the suit. Then dressed up, walk up and
kill Nute and all the seperatists, Have some TALKING scenes
with Tarkin on the bridge, talk about the construction of
the Death Star, give us the Vader we love in the original
films. I know Lucas wanted to preserve Vader's entrance on
the Tantive as the first real scene of his, but all my friends
think seeing more of Darth would have been MUCH better then
a NOOOOOOOOOOO. God I still can't believe that happened. Do
you think there was a scene where he was stomping up and down
like a 4 year old?
Enter General Grievous. Kids... See what smoking can do to
you? LOL. I thought he was very cool but unfortunately suffers
from the Darth Maul curse. A fantastic looking character that
has almost no screen time and dies POOF in a flash. as vader
would say... "ALL TOO EASY". The wookies also suffer
this fate. Why even have chewbacca in the film? he serves
ZERO purpose apart from beeing Yoda's personal taxi :P We
arrive at Kashyyyk, wow look at all those cool new vehicles
and army then POOF, Yoda leaves the planet in E.T's space
ship (did anyone see the similarity) hold on, rewind, what
do you mean it's already over? where is the battle?
Another huge dissapointment was 3P0's scenes. why even have
him in the film? he serves NO PURPOSE, we hardly see him at
all. He and R2 are so important in the originals and I remember
reading way way back at how George said that the droids were
the thread that held all 9 episodes together.
What I DID love...
I did love Order 66 and how the Jedi were trampled, though
maybe a little too much like Starship Troopers.
John Williams music, just too cool.
Everything Palpatine especially Transforming to the Emperor
and Tossing Senate Pods to Yoda, (though the first part of
Mace's fight was WAY TOO QUICK - C'mon these are JEDI, you
can't have them just stand there waiting to be sushi - Sorry
Kit Fisto :)
Clone Troopers, Now those costumes just make me drool. Wish
we saw more of them ( I guess we will in the TV shows next
year) Great seeing pre-biker scouts and Tie Pilots and, just
all of them TOO COOL.
LOVED LOVED LOVED seeing the inside of the Tantive IV, now
that's a Diorama that EVERYBODY need to make :)
The Opera Scene (oh is that what it was) - NOT - just teasing.
What a WASTE of location. If you are going to do an opera
at least show some close ups of what the audience is looking
at - even if its embarrasing corny female Mon Calamari dancers
(NiubNiub feels nauteous LOL) Let's watch Fifth Element to
see a better Opera that actually even fits into the plot.
LOVED Anakin melting and being in pain while the Vader costume
is put in place to help him stay alive. OH OH, and seeing
INSIDE the helmet, that was COOL.
I think what dissapoints me the most of these 3 new films
is that they were all DUMBED DOWN. I know we want kids to
see them but kids are not stupid, you don't have to speak
to them in 4 word sentences. Even Yoda seems to be affected.
Just check ANY scene in Empire and sure, he speaks backwards,
but not at a speed where he sounds like he is on tranquilisers?
ex... "DO or DO NOT, There is no TRY", I bet you
can hear it in your head you've seen Empire so many times
:) now if this was in the prequels he would speak it as "DO
(long pause) or (pause) DO NOT (pause again) There (pause)
is (pause) no (very long pause) TRY". C-3P0 suffers from
the same. In the originals he speaks normaly, yes in british
accent but in a normal tone as you and I would hold a conversation.
In the prequels it seems all over the top the accent and delivery.
:( Is this just me who noticed this? I know it's being picky
and you might say but it's star wars, but i don't see any
of this "childness" in the originals except maybe
a start in Jedi. When Leia says "Can someone get this
walking carpet out of my way" its funny because it was
witty. NOT because they thought "insert joke here to
make kids laugh"
So now the Trilogy is complete. We can debate for years on
how it could have been made better, how it should have been
as same writing/acting quality as Lord of the Rings, how we
would have changed this and that. Perhaps in 20 years, they
will remake Star Wars (like Hollywood is doing with War of
the Worlds, Willy Wonka, Amityville Horror, Dawn of the Dead
etc...) and we will get to see a new version that we will
probably still pick apart :) I guess in our nature to find
faults and complain. :P After 3 viewings, I still come out
of it...did I like it or was it Poop, it's almost a numbing
or "blah" kind of feeling. Regardless of the downsides
I think we still owe a huge THANK YOU to George for giving
us 6 COOL films that will live with us for a long, long time.
In order of greatness.... Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back,
Return of the Jedi, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith,
Phantom Menace.
May the force be with you. |
