| Being a big fan of Star Trek
Next Generation (The only Trek show I actually enjoy besides
Classic 60's) I always look forwards to the new movies. When
I saw the trailer and they said it was the END of a generation
i thought, oh no, don't tell me a Deep Space 9 Movie is next
- YUK. Before going to the cinema I had read Harry's review
on Ain't it cool news. It was BRUTAL. Could it be that this
movie is that bad? I was soon to find out...
First I am curious...Do you guys in other cities have to
put up with TV commercials BEFORE the Trailers? It's getting
really ridiculous. I looked at my watch and saw we had SUFFERED
through 15 minutes of ads I see on my local TV stations. If
I want to see ads I'll stay home. I don't understand how you
have to pay $15 for a ticket then watch 15 minutes of commercials.
I assume the companies, Bell, Ford, Mr. Beer, must PAY the
cinema to have their ads played right? So why not LOWER the
ticket price? This REALLY ANNOYS ME. No wonder people are
staying home more and just watching the film on DVD.
Ok so 25 minutes later the movie starts. I must agree wit
Harry on the opening Score. Actually the entire movies score.
What in the world happened? Where is the orchestra? It does
indeed sound like there is only 3 musicians. Even worse, it
atually sounds like the composer playing the "Orchestra"
preset sound from your $250 casio Keyboard. It's very distracting
and makes you cringe at some parts. I can't imagine anyone
wanting to get the soundtrack of this film.
The movie opens similar to Generations, When the crew was
on the Gallion giving Worf a "graduation" Party,
though this time at a wedding banquet. Watching Starfleet
personel in Dress Uniform waltzing to an italian orchestra
a la The Godfather just seemed out of place. Many forced one
liners make you groan. Especially when Data starts singing
(A demand Brent Spiner obviously gave the producers so he
would do the film - He is even credited as: Story By) Thankfully
the writers knew this and let Worf react the way we felt.
That was very funny. After this scene we jump to the Romulan
Senate...
I must agree with Harry on this note also...Who in the world
did this makeup? After seeing the awesome work of such films
like Lord of the Rings, Trek's make up is laughably BAD. We
can actually see where the latex nose ended and the pointy
ears started due to poor makeup blending. I don't have problems
with the designs of the Aliens, it fits the Star Trek Mold.
But the entire film feels like it was done with a TV crew
and then jumbo sized on a film screen. What you don't notice
on TV you certainly SEE in the movie.
As for the vilains in the film. They were OK. At first yoou
think he's a good guy and then find out that he is not and
wants to destroy earth to start a war with Romulans and federation
so that they tear each other apart. You just don't HATE him
enough to cheer when the end aproaches and you know the good
guys have to "win".
One thing that did surprise me was the amount of "Copying"
of other films Nemesis uses. Some of the computer screens
is a direct ripoff from the Matrix. And if anyone reading
this who is a STAR WARS fan :D, It is IMPOSSIBLE to NOT recognise
the corridor laser fights as the tantive opening scene and
Princess Leia Rescue, Even down to jumping into a chute that
leads to the trash compactor. You just replace the aliens
with Stormtroopersand THIS IS STAR WARS. Right down to even
the Laser sound effects.
Speaking of FX, the visuals vary from Awfull (The overexposed
planet at the begining is the UGLIEST footage I have ever
seen in a movie - Watch GATTACA if you want to know how to
DO IT RIGHT) to OK (Typical TV quality Matte paintings of
Star Trek) to Really Amazing work from Digital Domain (the
crashing of the Enterprise - and before you say..."I
can't believe the ship is destroyed AGAIN"...Don't worry,
at least it doesn't EXPLODE in this movie LOL.
In the end a MAJOR character gets killed but I won't say
who, you have to go see it to find out...OK, I'll tell you
but you have to Highlight the text to see the SPOILER...It's
Data (again I am certain a demand from Brent Spiner to reprise
his role in the film) But don't worry, as you have seen in
the trailers, a new Data was found that conviently had Data's
Memory transfered to him in the middle of the movie. So Data
lives inside B4's body, thus becoming the DATA from say Season
1 where he must learn to become human all over again. Geez...LOL...I
read that there was some 45 minutes cut from the film, mostly
character scenes, which I hope will find it's way into the
DVD. Now would these scenes have helped this cut? I don't
know. When the lights came up you knew it wasn't THE worst
of all the Trek Films, I think Trek V still holds that honour,
But it wasn't all that great. I think I prefered Insurrection,
which many fans said was weak.
If you like the Star Trek Next Generation show, you should
enjoy this movie. If the DVD were to come out tomorrow, I
am not sure if I would buy it. (OK who am I kidding LOL) Actually
considering the quality of the look, it might play better
on your TV screen when it hits video next June.
