| WOW, where do I start? As a fan
of the original 50's film (no I didn't see THAT in theaters,
I am old but not THAT old - LOL) I was very excited about
a remake and having Spielberg direct a Sci-Fi movie, well
what more can us fans ask for :D
The movie starts off pretty slow introducing the characters,
but soon after the ex-wife drops the kids off for the weekend,
we see what we think is a thunder storm, but actually it's
the Aliens beaming into their ships buried deep underground
for the past million years. You know what's coming, it is
called WAR of the WORLDS afterall :P but hold on to your hats,
ILM shows us once more what they are pro's at...AWESOME alien
effetcs.
The basic design of the aliens and their ships is faithfull
to the original book. Tripod bases that walk along the mountain
sides destroying all in their path. Land Tripods, Water Tripods,
you name it, it's just beautifull eye candy that looks SOO
SOO cool !!! The one thing you don't see in this film is the
flying saucers from the 50's version. But listen closely and
you can hear some slight homages to that film.
I think it's cool how the Aliens need the humans as fuel
for their ships, and then use the blood to spray the land
like pesticide in order to start turning earth into mars atmosphere.
very creepy.
Now in case you haven't yet seen the movie, I'm putting my
fave scenes in black - simply highlight to read...
When the first Alien comes out and
starts zapping the town citizens you just can't help but be
excited, The idea of having all the body vapourised and just
the clothes remains floating to the ground like a feather
is brilliant and makes the scene much more stressfull. Imagine
what you would do if you were in that croud? yikes.
The scene with the ferry capsizing
and the giant Alien ship coming out of the water and grabbing
people with it's tentacles is AWESOME. This will be watched
over and over on the dvd. I think this is actually my best
scene in the movie. To think people actually thought it was
a good idea to get on the boat LOL.
The basement scene made me think of
Signs but much more stressfull and actually showing us the
Aliens creeping upstairs then inside the house. Did anyone
else think of the Raptors from Jurassic Park ? :) and when
Tom and his daughter finally make it up to the surface and
get captured by a giant tripod, only to see that there are
others in the same situation. Not Good place to be. I don't
think I would want to get sucked up Sarlaac's cousin :P
The ending I guess is where the film dissapointed me most.
Why can't hollywood ever make a realistic
end that is NOT Walt Disney sugar coated all the happy family
smiles at the camera endings ? Had his daughter or son actually
die when he reaches his wife's house in Boston, it would have
more impact then rolling your eyes "oh brother"
the chances of all of them surviving when the entire world
is destroyed. C'mon, Had it happened this way I would
have given it 5 NiubNiubs.
Worth your cash to see it now? Yes Yes, even if it means
sitting through 30 minutes of tv commercials blown up into
35 mm - ugh, don't get me started. Run to the theaters now,
while you have the time, cause I know next week you will be
busy seeing Fantastic Four right? :P
