In the night skies near his Muncie, Indiana home, power repairman Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfus) experiences something out of this world. His close encounter sets into action an amazing chain of events that leads to contact with benevolent aliens and their Mothership. Spectacular special effects, John Williams' outstanding score and winning performances from Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, Melinda Dillion and legendary director Francois Truffaut in the role of Lacombe make "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" movie magic of the best kind.

After seeing Star Wars 25 times in 1977 I remember being very excited going to see Close Encounters. I was 13 years old. No need to tell you what a smashing success the movie was. I can't remember how many times I went, 3 or 4 at least - Hey tickets were $1.50 back then- but I was totally immersed in the experience and remember being VERY scared at the abduction scene. I couln't even listen to the soundtrack in the dark it freaked me out so much.

As an adult watching the film again, I can now appreciate the way Spielberg directed the movie (and still scared at the abduction - LOL) What I like best, and same is true for most movies of the 70's, is that the movie is very character driven and takes the time to develop relationships that make you care what happens on screen. Not 3 second edits like a MTV video and a running time of 80 minutes to make more cash at the box office.

The quality of the dvd print is amazing. I can watch this film over and over. The effects are still impressive at today's standards and even look better then some modern day effects. If you enjoyed Star Wars and Science Fiction movies, You MUST add this to your collection. If you are under 10, Cover your eyes when the kitchen appliences start freaking out :)...It's the shape of a square...LOL

When this same edition of Close Encounters was released on Laserdisc, I decided to "wait for the dvd" that was 3 years ago! But I can now say the wait was well worth the wait.

There is nothing more exciting then watching a documentary filmed in the present for a movie filmed 20 years ago. Seeing the actors reminice about their experiences and getting to see what they look like in 2001. Especially Cary Guffey now 29. It's amazing how you can still see the little kid from the movie when looking at him.

Clocking in just short of 2 hours the documentary goes through every aspect of the film, post production, casting, effects with the same depth and quality of Laurent Bouzereau's past making of's.

There are several deleted scenes that I had never seen before. Not on the Criterion Laserdisc at least.

Also is the original Trailers for Close Encounters (77) and the special Editions (79) and the 1979 Making of featurette.

Sadly there is no commentary track but the documentary makes up for that.
