THE MOVIE THE MOVIE

XXX First off I must admit I am not a martial arts - kung fu movie fan. I have never seen any Bruce Lee movies and the extent of fighting I have seen onscreen was Mortal Kombat, Charloe's Angels and The Matrix. I did not go see this film in theaters. After winning the Academy Award for best foreign film and having all my friends at work telling me how GREAT this movie was I thought I would finally watch it. Well the fighting scenes were cool, for the first 30 minutes. Then I completely lost interest almost falling asleep. Maybe the expectations were too high. The Tree sequence Roger Ebert kept saying was amazing was boring to me. The first fight along the rooftops was much more spectacular. I really like Michelle Yeoh in action, but enjoyed her performance much more in James Bond's Tomorrow Never Dies. Watch that movie instead - LOL.

If you enjoy Kung Fu film then go out and buy this DVD. The quality of sound and picture is quite impressive. If you are like me and not generally interested in the genre, you are better off renting. Ebay here I come - LOL.

SPECIAL FEATURES SPECIAL FEATURES
XXX Well the Making Of is pure "made for general audiences TV Special" bore. You see the stars compliment each other and some behind the scenes footage. Unfortunately they don't even talk about how the best part of the film was done: The "wire" fighting. How did they get the actors to climb walls and fly?. They speak of people pulling ropes and then removing the wires after...SHOW US!!!! Thats what I want to see in a Making Of. At a running time of less then 15 minutes, it was 15 minutes too many ;) The Michelle Yeoh interview is a bit more interesting but not that much more. I started listening to the commentary and stopped after 25 minutes. The writer loves to talk about himself instead of what is on screen. Ang Lee tries harder but doesn't talk about anecdotes that occured during the filming of his movie. A wasted commentary if you ask me.
