Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is an epic adventure of good against evil, the power of friendship and individual courage. The saga centers around an unassuming Hobbit named Frodo Baggins who inherits a Ring that would give a dark and powerful lord the power to enslave the world. With a loyal fellowship of elves, dwarves, men and a wizard, Frodo embarks on a heroic quest to destroy the One Ring and pave the way for the emergence of mankind.

WHAT I LIKE

If you thought the theatrical release was great, the Director's Cut is even better. The 3.5 hours passs like 1 hour. This movie is so well made. The story is well adapted from the books and the actors all seem perfectly cast. The first 2 DVD's consist of the movie. I know many of you don't like the fact that the movie is split in two. At least it's better then 8 sides that you would get on a laserdic Hee hee. I can tell you that the switch is very well planed and fits perfectly as if it was an intermission in a broadway play. Elrond says "You are the fellowship of the ring" fade to black. Insert disc 2.

I had only seen Fellowship of the Rings 1 time at the cinema then again when the 2 DVD set came out. So I didn't know it by heart to notice all the minor changes made in the Director's Cut. However scenes like the Elves leaving the forest and the crossing of the swampy marshes I noticed right away. Little additions but really cool.

Now if you love Audio Commentaries then you are in for a real treat. 4 of them to be exact. Now this is DVD done right. The director and writer speak on 1 track, the entire cast of 10 actors are on another, then the design and fx teams make up the last 2. I haven't had time to go through all 4, that would take 14 hours LOL. I will update info as I listen to them.

If the set included only these 2 discs we would have had plenty of our money's worth. But wait...there is more :D

DVD 3: From Book to Vision Apendices...
Now here you have the most awesome documentaries ever made for a DVD. On this disc is everything from book adaptation to casting the actors. You can tell jackson really loved the DVD format and that he has a real love for this project and the fans. On this disc is over 2 1/2 hours of video. It is really amazing. And these aren't "Entertainment Tonight" documentaries either, they explain all levels of filmaking in DETAIL. Each making of runs between 35 and 55 minutes. It is really amazing to see how this all got off the ground. I was surprised to learn that Miramax was the first studio involved but wanted nothing to do with making more then 1 film. thank god they let the property go. Imagine having the 3 movies crammed into 1, I am sure it would not have had the same scope and impact.

Fans of Niubniubs will drool at the maquette and Miniatures documentary. To say Miniature is a joke when you see the size of these dioramas. AMAZING. I was drooling all over myself - LOL. If I didn't work with computers, I think this is what I would have done with my career. The details in their miniatures encourages me to know that there are so many tricks still for me to learn and that my dioramas can only go even furthur - I can't wait :)

DVD 4: From Vision to Reality Apendices...
This disc covers everything from start of filming to the world premieres. One of the most interesting of the 7 Making Of's on this disc is the Creating Illusions of Scale documentary. You will be amazed when you see just how many different techniques were used to give the actors the propper "hobbit" scale. the freakiest is the face molds put on top of the little actors. That is FREAKY - LOL. And the story of the little Indian who plays Frodo's double is soooo funny. If you are fans of the Simpsons you will know why I was laughing so much. I didn't know Elijah was such a comedian :D

Now if you are not yet convinced to buy this set...get a friend to buy it for you this holliday season. This is a MUST for anyone who has a DVD player. AMAZING.

  • I need 1 week to watch everything - LOL.

  • I cannot imagine anything that is wrong with this DVD. A landmark that will be hard to reach from other studios. I just hope that one day we will get a Star Wars DVD as elaborate as this. Simply Awesome.
