Here we go again :) This is a quick sketch of what I hope the final diorama will look like. It's kinda hard to figure out so use your imagination a little - LOL

So we begin as usual with a basic box I created using 4 sheets of foam core. They were bonded using a hot glue gun - you must get one - works miracles !

Vader's Secret Diorama Box measurements are 17" high X 24" wide X 14" deep

Here is a close up of the curved support that we need so that the foamcore will have a nice solid curve and will not cave in or warp out of shape with time.

I cut a piece of foamcore 28 by 17 inches. At around 14, I start slicing 1 cm wide grooves. Make sure NOT to go through the foam. You want to use a sharp exacto knife and just slit 3/4 of the foam's thickness.

Now we can bend the foamcore into a circular shape.

Bend it slightly before glueing to make sure it doesn't snap and crack when pressed against its support inside the box frame.

This is what the foamcore piece looks like once hot glued to the box frame. Now we are ready to apply the background decals.

Next step is to find magazine references from the film. This is the one I used.

Using Photoshop, I follow the patern from the movie. As you can see, I have only finished 1 row of lights. more to come soon.

November 04, 2004

I printed my photoshop patterns on full page label paper. This way all I have to do is peel off the backing and stick the paper to the foamcore. Looks great doesn't it?

Now it's time to start making the scaffolding platform. Using pictures from "the art of empire strikes back" book, I cut out a sheet of foam core that will act as the floor base.

November 05, 2004

Now copy and cut a duplicate shape and hot glue gun them together using a sinple strip of foamcore. This will give the extruding end the shape of a construction I-Beam.

November 05, 2004

Cut 2 more strips and slit them at 1 cm intervals in order to be able to bend them and glue them to the base to add extra support. make sure NOT to cut through to the other side.

November 05, 2004

Now cut a poster tube right down the middle giving us a perfect half circle.

November 05, 2004

Glue the tube to the foamcore base. This is the underbelly of the ramp.

I then cut and glued 1/2 cm wide strips of foamcore to act as guard rails.
