Now that the Wall Details are done, we need to prepare
the Wall Details that will give the illusion of a
working Trash Compactor.
Start by cutting 5X 19cm Strips and 4X 6.75cm Strips.
All pieces are 1cm Wide. Place these aside for now. |
|
 |
 |
|
January 19, 2003
For the side walls we need to cut 14X 18cm Long X
3cm Wide.
Now we are ready to assemble :) |
|
 |
 |
|
January 19, 2003
The Thick 3cm pieces fit on the Right and Left Walls.
The thinner 1cm pieces are on the Front Wall.
These pieces will create the illusion of interlocking
Grooves that guide the Trash Compactor walls when
crucshing garbage. |

Start by attaching the Left and Right panels at 6.5cm
from the floor base (Blue Arrows).
The Front Wall panels fit right on top of the side
panels or 3cm Down from the Top of the Door Frame
(Red Arrows).
Now that these are in place you can easily Hot Glue
the other panels by alternating Front, Side, Front,
Side, Front, Side. |
|
 |
This way you
are certain that all pieces will interlock perfectly. |
 |
|
January 19, 2003
Here is how the Panels should interlock between Front
and Sides.
Notice how the first 19cm Wide Thin Strip rests flush
against the top of the Doorway. |

Here we see the finished construction for our Deluxe
Trash Compactor.
Even unpainted it looks cool and all done in less
then 2 days. Now how cool is that? :D |

The two Diorama Trash Compactor Sets are connected
and fit perfectly inside the Walls.
I placed a Test Door Decal to see what the finished
scene will look like.
I LOVE it :) |

I had time to apply the first Base Coat of Light
Brown to the Foamfore Walls.
I used Latex Paint from the Art Store with a little
water added to give it a "Wash" effect.
Make sure to NOT put TOO much Water because your
Foamcore will WARP.
Also make sure to use a little amount of paint at
a time. Dip the brush in a little bit of paint and
Press the brush all over the foamcore. |
|
 |
As the paint
on the brush starts to dry, move it quickly back and forth
pressing hard to color the Foamcore. This is what gives
the old rusty look. Then dab a little more paint and repeat
the process. Make sure you don't paint too thick a coat.

And here is what the Diorama looks like with the
Base Coat and temp test Door Decal.
Now we are ready for detailing, adding oil Drips
and stains. Almost done and only 2 days work so far
:) |

One VERY usefull item in your Paint Kit are Sponges.
These will allow you to create all kinds of artistic
effects ranging from Rocky Surfaces, Marble Floors
and Rusty Walls. |
|
 |
 |
January 26, 2003
I placed a Darker Brown Latex Paint in a little tray
and diped my Sponge lightly and then pressed it all
over the Foamcore surface.
Don't pres TOO hard, you want to get a textured look.
Simply pretend the Sponge is on a big Pogo Stick
bouncing all over the place :) |
|
 |
 |
January 26, 2003
Now dow the same thing for the Left wall.
Don't worry if it doesn't reach into the corners.
We will fix that later when putting our "Oil
Drips" coat of paint.
Let this dry about 2-3 minutes. That's the joy of
latex paints :) |
|

January 26, 2003
Now comes the fun part. Dripping paint to give a
yucky "Oil Leaking" effect.
To do this I used a big brush dipped in a glass of
Water. First, water down the entire surface of Foamcore
with a big brush.
Now take a Tiny Fine Detail brush soaked with Dark
brown and black paint
(add plenty of water to dilute the paint) and press
it at the top of each Beam.
Since the beam is wet, the watered down paint will
flow easily and drip into some really cool paterns. |
|
 |
Make sure to
ONLY water ONE Beam at a time. If the water dries up, the
paint will not drip properly. Continue until ALL beams on
the wall are weathered.
|
 |
January 26, 2003
Now do the same thing on the Right Wall.
This time, after the paint dripped, I took my Sponge
and Very Lightly moved it down the Foamcore to accentuate
the "Oil Drips" I did 2-3 passes on each
beam to get the result I was happy with.
If you get too much "dark" drips, simply
use the same technique but with a lighter color. It's
all about blending.
|
|
 |
 |
January 26, 2003
After 2 hours, i was ready to do the Left side.
Remember to only wet ONE beam at a time. if you put
TOO much water you could get Warping.
The Diorama is still made from cardboard remember. |
