Trace all around the outer edge of the Layer 2 shape.
This will NOT be a cutting line but your center point.
Lift up Layer 2 ceiling and add 1 cm to the outside
of the line, all the way around.
Cut this line.
|
|
 |
Now trace 2.5
cm from the center line towards the inside. Cut this line. |

We now have a similar shape to layer 1 but slightly
wider on the outside and thinner on the inside. |

Hot glue it to the Layer 1 base.
The green arrows are pointing at the added piece.
Can you see the added embossed look it gives to layer
1 ? |

Now I swear the ceiling is done :) And it looks amazing
just like in the film.
One problem I noticed though is that my Support
beams now don't seem to reach high enough :(
I will have to cut some extra foamcore and make them
a bit taller so that they reach flush with the layer
1 edges. |

Remember that special AMAZING surprise I mentioned
last week?
Well check it out!!! Alexx Jones sent this WalMart
Coruscant Display to me and guess what? It fits dead
on with the size of palpatine's window.
It can't get better then that :) Well hey, it can... |
|
 |
I have scanned
the image and will be adding it to the Download Section
for all of you to use. 3 chears for Alexx :) |

The height isn't quite right yet, but already this
has SO much potential.
Having real ILM art in your dioramas will really
bring it to life. |

Another angle of the window. With proper lighting
and distance, it should look like the movie. |

Ok, before I can start painting the room, I need
to fill in some cracks.
I did some tests with Sculpey but when I use the
hair dryer to harden it, it melts the foamcore. Not
good :(
|
|
 |
So I found this
new clay at the art store that dries with air contact. I
will know tomorrow if it is any good or if it has huge cracks
that we do NOT want in the diorama. |
 |
|
July 28, 2002
I am also patching cracks at the foamcore joints.
Once the paint is applied, it would look really ugly
if there were huge gaps between foamcore pieces. |

Making organic shapes is easy, but Simetry and perfect
angles, now that's HARD. If I had a wood workshop
I know it would turn out perfect but make due with
what we have right?
I guess in a sense it adds a bit to the charm of
it being hand made custom. |

And here is the finished statue. Very impressive.
I have added a base in regular sculpey on top of
my spraypaint lids.
I might add a bit of Super Sculpey later on to blend
the statues feet to the final podium shape.
|
|
 |
I still haven't
decided weather I want to mold copies or make 3 more podiums
shapes by hand...they take forever... |

Here is the statue in it's resting place. or should
she be on the other side? hmmm.
I will make sure to figure it out before the final
diorama photos :) Can you picture this with color? |

I bought some latex paint at the art supply store
and couldn't resist. I just had to see what some color
would look like :)
Also, you need to paint this piece BEFORE attaching
it to the Layer 1 and 2 sections.
I used a mini sponge roller to avoid brush strokes. |
|
 |
 |
July 28, 2002
Hey, did somebody say color? LOL.
I used the Hot Glue gun to attach the ceiling to
the layer 1-2 base.
Trust me... painting it before attaching is a life
saver. Now we can move on to the base. |

I used the same burnt red ocre for the layer 2 tiles.
If you see what looks like an unpainted foamcore layer
in the center (between layer 2 and 3) do not panic
:)
Remember the extra layer strips we added? This layer
is painted light grey.
|
|
 |
The layer 1
rings are painted dark grey with the inside edges in black.
A bit hard to see, I might lighten up the Layer 1 color
once the room is painted. |
