Here it is...This is what I want the diorama to look
like when completed. It is the corridor or the Rebel
Blockade runner where princess Leia gives R2 the Death
Star plans. |

This is a blueprint of the diorama as seen from the
top. You can see that it measures 26 inches long by
8 1/2 inches wide. The height is 7 inches.
The "L" and "R" is where Leia
and R2 stand. The cross shape is the floor grid and
the protruding lines are the circular divisions. |

This is the test printout of my Photoshop texture
to see if the scale is accurate.
You can downlaod
these textures now if you want to make your own
diorama. In the following pages you will see where
each texture goes and how to assemble them. |

McDonald's straws (no cash plug just the right size
- LOL ) will be the pipes that connect between each
seperator and wall units. They will be painted a similar
blue grey like the printout. |

OK, Tests are complete and it's time to start the
diorama. I printed out 5 sheets of seperators
on a sheet of label paper and stuck them to the foamcore.
Now all that is left is to cut them all out precicely
and make holes for the straws to pass. |

April 13, 2001
Using a very sharp exacto blade, cut along the outlines
of the shape in the decals. I extended the color past
the embossed edges to allow us cutting room. |
April 13, 2001
Now it's time to make holes for the straws to pass
through. Start with poking a cross shape with your
exacto knife. You can see the marks above the white
arrows. Then use a pointy object like a sculpting
tool or screwdriver. |
April 13, 2001
Once you poke the hole with a tiny object, you can
expand the holes width using a pencil. When inserting
the pencil twist left the right then left then right
etc...to prevent crushing the foamcore. |
April 13, 2001
Once you remove the pencil this is what the holes
will look like. Don't mind the ugly ripped paper inside
the holes, they won't be visible once the straws go
through them. |
April 13, 2001
You can test your hole size by putting your straws
inside. If they don't fit, twist the pencil deeper
or use a wider tool, though a pencil should be just
fine. |
April 13, 2001
When you turn your shape on it's back you will notice
the foamcore has been ripped by the pencil. Just use
a very sharp blade to cut off the excess foamcore.
BE CAREFULL NOT TO CUT YOUR FINGERS. |
April 13, 2001
Now that we have a smooth flat surface, print another
decal and cut it along the embossed lines as you did
the front. Now peel back the paper or aply glue and
stick to the shape's back. |
April 13, 2001
The hard part here is making the decal fit properly.
It is impossible to get a perfect fit. You will always
have some foamcore exposure like the black arrows
show us. Thats ok for now as 1-this will be the backside
of the diorama and 2-we will later use a colored marker
to hide the white area. |
April 13, 2001
Now simply poke through the paper where you made
the holes on the front side. |
April 13, 2001
Here is what NOT TO DO, learning the hard way, On
my first try, I placed the decals on both sides before
making the holes and completely ripped the back sides
decals. Not a good thing. Just make the holes before
applying the backside's decal as you see in the earlier
pictures. |
